Almost 1000 years of Brewing Expertise
We were founded by monks in 1074, so we can proudly claim that we’re one of the oldest Belgian beers. We may be nearly 1000 years old, but we’re going as strong as ever. Click on the arrows to discover our - very ancient - history.
1074
Affligem abbey was founded by 6 knights, former brothers in arms, turned monks in the village of Affligem in 1074. The monks lived by the rules of St Benedict, which stress the importance of community. Water at the time wasn’t the best, so they thoughtfully, and very politely, started to brew beer for their guests (which was a safer alternative). Never say Belgians don’t prize hospitality!
Over the years
There have been some tough times over the long years for the monks of Affligem. They overcame hardships both big-and-small and they never once lost their nerve or their passion for brewing.
1956
The brewery was destroyed in World War II, and the monks faced yet another challenge. But Belgians never give up when beer is on the line. They found a solution and began collaborating with the brewery of Opwijk, located close to the abbey. Together they adapted the ancient recipe to fit modern techniques while keeping its quality and signature taste.
Nowadays
We have expertise that your average craft brewery can only dream of, and we’re as rich and smooth as we’ve ever been. Make a toast to our next 1000 years!
